All the fairies have been invited to Princess Beauty’s christening – except one, the evil Carabosse. She gate-crashes the party and casts a terrible spell. Only the power of Fairy Crystal can help – but to do so she must cast her own spell and send a whole castle and everybody in it to sleep for 100 years. Will the handsome prince be able to defeat Carabosse and wake Beauty with a kiss? A traditional pantomime for all the family, with music, glamour, magic and a bit of time-travel.

Celia hopes to tune into Garrick minds

PANTOMIMES are as much a part of Christmas as carols, church services and turkey dinners. Boys become girls, don garish costumes, and you're bombarded with jokes that definitely have the cringe factor. It gives audiences the chance to act like big kids, whatever their age, for one night only.

This year's offering at Altrincham Garrick is Sleeping Beauty and, for writer Celia Bonner, it's her first brush with this formula driven form of entertainment which, despite our rapidly changing times, remains as popular as ever. Celia believes her experience in children's programmes for the BBC has been invaluable in writing the script and she hopes that she's "in tune with the kids."

What attracted her to this particular story? "I always like best the pantomimes where the principal boy is quite active and has to fight the baddies. This is one of those. The wicked witch is very wicked and the principal boy has to fight the wicked witch," says Celia, who describes the show's score as a mixture of traditional and pop songs.

As well as writing Sleeping Beauty she's also directing it, but Sale based Celia has fond memories of treading the boards in previous Garrick pantos. "I was Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk and the other time I was a panda in Aladdin. It's quite scary at times, because the audience get the idea that they can join in you never quite know what they're going to say.," she recalls.
