Having foiled the plans of his nemesis, Professor Moriarty (‘The Napoleon of Crime’), Holmes and Watson are pursued by Moriarty and his cohorts across Europe. After many adventures Holmes and Moriarty come face to face on top of the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. The final contest between the two men ends Act One, with them locked in each other’s arms and reeling over to surely certain death into the fearful torrent below.
Act Two opens with the surprise return of Holmes and the introduction of another Sherlock Holmes favourite, Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard. Holmes, Watson and Lestrade are intrugued by the coincidences connecting events from Act One and a murder that has just occurred at Birlstone Manor in Sussex. They are resolved to investigate and solve the mystery. You will not be surprised to learn that they do! In fact, as Holmes explains, ‘It was elementary, Watson.’
On the last page of the play they learn that Professor Moriarty has also survived the Reichenbach Falls, so both men live to fight another day.
